Mood Music, a playlist curation project

Mood Music is a series of monthly themed playlists/mixtapes, created alongside multimedia artwork.

The project included identity design, graphic design, branding, editorial design, and moving image.

In search of a lockdown project to help improve illustration and moving image skills, I had been thinking about the typical themed playlists on streaming services and how they are often built around generic themes like ‘chill-out’. I wanted to shoot for something more specific that has more engaging artwork.

This also made me think about music formats of the past and present, and how the visuals for the project could flow across multiple scales and types of media. I set about building a grid system, and type hierarchy to provide a structure that could sit behind multiple instalments of the project.

The grid structure was designed so that the graphic elements could be easily re-arranged for different formats, from social media images, to posters and packaging, with the minimum possible amount of re-sizing.
