Part zine, part portfolio, part experiment

This personal project was a way to refine editorial design and showcase work. This image shows the front and back cover.

The project included graphic design, and editorial design.

Contents spread

I have an interest in systems to eliminate possibilities and aid decision making. Both the cover and the contents pages explored this concept, with a kind of procedurally generated collage approach. Each collage element is ‘sucked’ from the same x and y co-ordinates on another corresponding page within the document.

Scale was also a fixed parameter for the majority of the publication. Due to the dominance of displaying work digitally, it is rare to see printed objects at the exact true scale at which they were painstakingly designed.

So, I decided that all images of: editorial design; business cards; packaging etc, would be displayed at 100% scale (with a few exceptions to explain context). Even though this rule means that some spreads are ruthlessly cropped off the page, it is possible to get an appreciation of the intended output.

Context spread for project 4

This spread shows the full spreads at 25% scale, that the previously 100% scale displayed images were taken from.

The zine contains: an introductory essay, explaining the idea behind the project; five sections each showcasing a work example and including an introductory text page; together with a CV; and colophon.
